VoLTE is ON. VoLTE gains momentum if it is packaged with an application suite around Operator's IMS and SPIT offerings.
VoLTE battery consumption in terms of signaling is efficient and another way VoLTE can complement this is by the ability to move the call to a twinned device based on the multi endpoints registration per TR 92.
VoLTE enablement of connected devices for voice activated services.
New mid call features need to be added to VoLTE call
QOS enforcement
Federates and Exchanges for Inter VoLTE calls
Wi-Fi calling and voice call continuity
Ecosystem is already in place in terms of handsets. All the smartphones have a higher screen resolution, front facing camera and HD Video and support multiple base bands. There is lot of real estate for mid call features, other aspects of the Ecosystem will evolve overtime.
VoLTE is the natural process of evolution for Operators and it is not necessarily a take on OTT wireless voice players. VoLTE is meant to replace the traditional circuit-switched phone service available on cellphones so it could use some deregulation:
It would be time before net neutrality can be enforced on wireless networks and this gestation period should see all the adaptations needed to be built into VoLTE to make it robust. Once the technology is baked things can be adapted easily.
Without prioritization of this traffic, the quality and reliability of the phone service could be severely impacted. As new services are layered onto the networks and historical separation of data and voice services vanishes the need to address QoS issues will only increase.
It is key that this evolution and innovation be able to progress unfettered by restrictive regulation. Mobile broadband service should be able to prevent users from using voice or video telephony applications that compete with the mobile broadband Service Provider’s services, subject to reasonable network management.
Signaling for VoLTE travels through the IMS network and the IMS Policy and charging control networks work with the Evolved Packet Core to provide target QoS, which would include guaranteed bit rate (GBR) for QCI = 1 Evolved Packet System bearer. Hence, any non-IMS user application such as voice and video cannot be expected to have the IMS application-like QOS
Aim for minimal regulations for mobile wireless networks to promote innovations and there by facilitate achieving the ultimate goals of superior network and spectral efficiency and excellent user experience
Unlike the PSTN migration to VOIP, wireless migration to VoLTE can be much faster. One major breakout of VoIP was an opportunity for BLECs in terms of cloud voice and SIP trunking providers. VoLTE can create new MVNOs in a similar fashion.
